Edith Luhanga

Edith Luhanga is an assistant research professor at Carnegie Mellon University Africa. Her research interests are in human-centered design and evaluation of behavior change applications that promote health, financial inclusion, and digital wellbeing, leveraging artificial intelligence and games to provide interventions and promote engagement. Edith teaches Applications of AI in Africa, ICT in Africa, and User Experience Design. She is also a member of CMU-Africa’s Digital Public Goods Network Project, which aims to promote the development and deployment of digital public infrastructure in Africa, and a faculty mentor on the Learning Sciences for Innovators program, where she has advised EdTech startups in Africa on conducting user research and mobile app design. 

Edith received a PhD in Information Science, specializing in ubiquitous computing applications, from the Nara Institute of Science and Technology (Japan) in 2018. She also holds a MSc Advanced Computing Science and a BEng (Hons) in Electronic and Computer Engineering from the University of Nottingham (UK). Edith has served as a deputy project leader for a 10-year capacity building project that leverages artificial intelligence and information science and she represented Tanzania in the UNESCO intergovernmental committee meetings to draft the recommendations on the ethics of artificial intelligence in 2021.
