GenAIforGood Challenge: Partnering to advance Open-Source Generative AI for local and global Impact

  • Date
    28 October 2025
    Timeframe
    14:30 - 15:30 CET Geneva
    Duration
    60 minutes

The GenAI for Good Challenge is a global initiative connecting innovators and changemakers to tackle real-world problems in health, agriculture, and climate resilience. Led in partnership between IEEE Humanitarian Technologies and ITU, the Challenge aims to advance the responsible and inclusive deployment of open-source Generative AI to address country level and local needs. As emerging technologies rapidly evolve, partnerships become essential to ensure that AI innovation serves the public good rather than being driven solely by commercial interests. Through this collaboration, IEEE and ITU are mobilizing global innovators to design and test GenAI solutions aligned with use cases identified by ITU and UN agencies on the ground. The Challenge will recognize three winning teams, one per focus area, each receiving support to pilot their solutions in real-world contexts. The results and learnings from these pilots will be captured in a white paper, advancing open knowledge and frameworks for the responsible use of GenAI worldwide.
By bringing together the expertise of global organizations, academia, and practitioners, the GenAI for Good Challenge demonstrates how we can harness the power of emerging technologies to solve local challenges, scale global impact, and ensure no one is left behind.

    Learning Objectives:

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

    • Describe the purpose and structure of the GenAI for Good Challenge, including its focus areas in health, agriculture, and climate resilience.
    • Explain the role of partnerships between IEEE and ITU in promoting responsible and inclusive deployment of open-source Generative AI.
    • Analyze real-world use cases of Generative AI in agriculture, to understand how open source AI solutions can address local challenges and strengthen digital ecosystems.
    • Evaluate the potential impact of collaborative AI projects on communities and policy frameworks, emphasizing inclusivity, open knowledge sharing, and sustainable capacity-building.
    • Reflect on how open source Generative AI initiatives can foster innovation sovereignty in developing regions, enabling local ownership, transparency, and equitable participation in the AI economy.
