Christine Steenkamp

Dr Christine Steenkamp is a senior lecturer and researcher at the Physics Department, Stellenbosch University. Her research team uses the quantum properties of atoms and the way atoms interact with laser light to control them. The collaborate with industry on laser-based techniques to select atoms with properties that make them suitable for medical use. This is aimed to make novel cancer therapies available in future. They also investigate the use of laser-controlled atoms as qubits to store information. She enjoys teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students. Balancing a career in science with family life is part of her journey.
