AI Steering Committee of the Impact Initiative

The mandate of the AI Steering Committee is to formulate a strategic framework for funding and achieving project milestones by 2030, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the initiative’s broader aims. Its responsibilities include evaluating projects for scalable execution, offering advanced AI technical guidance, and meticulously assessing project proposals to select those that offer the most practical, significant, and inventive contributions, ensuring alignment with the UN SDGs.

The AI Steering Committee of the Initiative is responsible for:

  • Guiding research efforts by defining key challenges in AI that address UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and crafting strategic roadmaps to tackle them.
  • Evaluating the technical merit and innovation of proposed solutions, focusing on scalability, explainability, and real-world impact.
  • Selecting the most promising and impactful projects through rigorous evaluations, ensuring they align with SDGs and represent the forefront of AI research.

Committee members will contribute in their personal capacities, bringing a wealth of knowledge and perspective to the Committee’s efforts. The Committee members will convene on a regular basis (online and in-person) as requested by the Chair of the Initiative.

Selection of Committee members will be through a transparent process, involving a public call for candidates prior to the AI for Good Global Summit 2025, overseen by the Initiative Chair. The call will last for 3 months. The Committee will embody 8-10 members with a balanced representation across gender, age, geographic distribution, and expertise in AI.

Membership is for 2 years with possibility to extend for additional 2 years; on a voluntary basis and is not linked to employment prospects at the ITU or with sponsoring entities.
