Sung Soo Kim

Sung Soo Kim is the Deputy Minister of the Office of R&D Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, South Korea. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Imperial College London and has built an extensive career in science and technology policy, international cooperation, and research management.

In his current role as Deputy Minister, which he assumed in October 2025, he oversees national R&D policy initiatives. Prior to this, he served as the Director General of the Basic and Applied Research Policy Bureau, and earlier as the Director General of the R&D Investment Review Bureau within the Ministry. His international expertise is highlighted by a tenure at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from 2023 to 2025.

Throughout his career, he has held key leadership positions, including Director General for Planning and Coordination at the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission and Director of the Science and Technology Policy Division. His foundational experience includes serving as the Chief Secretary to the Minister for Education, Science and Technology and leading various divisions focused on innovation clusters, international cooperation, and biotechnology development. He began his professional journey as an Assistant Director at the Ministry of Science and Technology, focusing on innovation policy and venture business promotion after earning his B.A. in Electrical Engineering from Seoul National University.
