Ruth Mesfin Getachew

Ruth Mesfin Getachew is a passionate and purpose-driven sociologist, currently interning at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), where she contributes to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). While fulfilling her internship responsibilities in Geneva, she is also completing her Master’s degree in Sociology in Germany. Ruth is deeply committed to justice, intentional living, and making a global impact through her work and life.

Originally from Ethiopia, Ruth earned her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Addis Ababa University, where she wrote her undergraduate thesis on the women’s movement in Ethiopia. Driven by a desire to broaden her global perspective, she moved to Germany to pursue a Master’s degree in Sociology, specializing in social structure and social inequality. Her minor modules include global studies, gender sociology, and political sociology. Her current Master’s thesis focuses on the integration experiences of young migrant women in Germany.

Ruth’s academic and professional journey centers on research, advocacy, and policymaking for vulnerable populations. Her work spans key areas such as migration, integration, social justice, freedom of religion and belief, and women’s rights. She is also passionate about the intersection of artificial intelligence and social impact, exploring how AI can be harnessed for social good m, particularly in social policy, humanitarian response, and access to justice. She advocates for ethical AI frameworks that protect marginalized communities from bias and exclusion, firmly believing that technology should serve to uplift, not exploit; to empower, not numb.

Beyond her professional and academic pursuits, Ruth is an avid language learner and active volunteer. She is currently part of the Young AI Leaders Programme as a team lead for the AI for Good initiative, where she continues to bridge her passion for technology and human rights.
