PULSE Racing

PULSE Racing

PULSE Racing, a student-driven initiative at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), is revolutionizing rehabilitation for individuals with spinal cord injuries through Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) technology. Our mission is to restore mobility by enabling these individuals to cycle using their own muscle power. Collaborating with Dutch manufacturer BerkelBike, we harness cutting-edge movement science to refine FES cycling systems, optimize electrode configurations, and maximize muscle performance.

Our work extends beyond the technical—FES cycling promotes profound physiological and mental benefits, including improved blood circulation, muscle growth, oxygen uptake, and overall endurance. This transformative technology enhances not only physical health but also the confidence and independence of our athletes. Through our efforts, we aim to empower individuals with spinal cord injuries, helping them regain mobility, independence, and a better quality of life.

Now in our 8th iteration, PULSE Racing is a testament to the passion and innovation of VU students. Each year, a new team of interdisciplinary students takes the reins, building on the progress of previous years to push the boundaries of what FES technology can achieve. This collaborative effort ensures continuous improvement and new perspectives in our mission to transform lives.

We stimulate to cycle!
