Patrick Lucey

Dr Patrick Lucey is the Chief Scientist at sports data giant Stats Perform, where he leads the AI team in maximizing the value of the company’s extensive sports data repositories. With over 20 years of experience in the AI field, he has held research positions at Disney Research, the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, and IBM’s T.J. Watson Research Center during his Ph.D. studies.  Originally from Australia, Patrick earned a BEng in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern Queensland and a Ph.D. from Queensland University of Technology, where his research focused on multimodal speech modeling. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers and received numerous best paper awards at prestigious international conferences, including the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, WACV, and INTERSPEECH. His work has been featured by media outlets such as the BBC and Nature and highlighted in popular sports analytics books like Soccernomics. Dr Lucey was a member of the IOC’s AI Working Group, contributing to the formation of the IOC AI Agenda. His research interests include artificial intelligence, interactive machine learning in sports, and AI education. Recently, he piloted a course on “AI in Sport,” designed to help students from non-traditional backgrounds understand AI concepts through the interactive and visual nature of sports data.
