Patricia Shaw

Patricia has over 20 years’ experience as a lawyer in data, technology and regulatory/government affairs and is a registered Solicitor in England and Wales, and the Republic of Ireland. During her time working as a Solicitor, she has worked for both FTSE50 companies and the NHS. She has authored and edited several works on law and regulation, policy, ethics, and AI. She has a particular interest in algorithmic bias, autonomous decision making in high impact AI systems, privacy, and fairness, and how AI impacts on gender, religion, and belief. Her focus has predominately been areas where there is high risk impact on society such as in Finance, Health, and Education (including the impact on the future of work).

Trish is an expert advisor to the Council of Europe on Generative AI and the impacts of Freedom of Expression (MSI- AI), is an independent expert on the European Commission’s General Purpose AI Code of Practice working group concerning AI Governance, on the project advisory board to the Global Partnership on AI Group concerning Transformative AI policy for Gender, Diversity and Equality, sits on the UKAS Artificial Intelligence Technical Advisory Committee, and represents Equinet in the making of the fundamental rights centred EU AI Act standards with Cen/Cenelec.

She is also an expert advisor on the IEEE’s CertifAIEd (previously known as ECPAIS) ethical certification panel, is an IEEE Maestro (a title only given to 3 people in the world) and, sits on IEEE, BSI, and ISO standards working groups. She is also an advisory board member to: AI & Faith, AI Christian Partnership, AI Faith and Civil Society Commission, and to Baylor University’s Centre for Standards in Ethical AI, as well as a Fellow of ForHumanity working on Independent Audit of AI Systems.

Her other roles include being Chair of the UK’s Society for Computers and Law (SCL) (being the first female chair in its 50 year history), being on the boards of the International Technology Law Association (iTechlaw), the International Federation of Computer Law Associations (IFCLA)) and Women Leading in AI (which has produced works such as ‘10 principles of Responsible AI’ launched in the UK Parliament in 2019, and, with EqualityNow, the Alliance for Universal Digital Rights (Audri.org) – a digital framework for a future where everyone (especially women and girls) in the digital world can enjoy the right to safety, freedom and dignity.

In 2021, Patricia was listed on the 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics™. Patricia was also named on Computer Weekly’s longlist as one of the Most Influential Women in UK Technology in 2021, in 2022, in 2023, and again in 2024.
