Osman Bakr

Osman M. Bakr is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Associate Vice President of Research at KAUST, and serves as Executive Editor for ACS Materials Letters. He received his B.Sc. from MIT and Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Harvard University.

His research group is a leading innovator on the design and synthesis of hybrid organic-inorganic semiconductors and quantum materials, and their applications in sensors and renewable energy.

He is the founder of Quantum Solutions, a deep-tech spin-off from his lab. The company is now a leading manufacturer of cutting-edge imaging systems that operate in spectral ranges beyond human vision, like short-wave infrared light, at a fraction of the cost of legacy technologies. This creative leap is democratizing advanced imaging for applications ranging from monitoring energy infrastructure to remote sensing.

Bakr’s contributions have been recognized with the Kroll Medal & Prize by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining; the Kuwait Prize by Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences; the Research Excellence Award by the Research Development and Innovation Authority, RDIA, Saudi Arabia.

The Times Higher Education named Bakr one of the ten leading university researchers world-wide in the field of “perovskite solar cells” and Clarivate designated Bakr as a Highly Cited Researcher in Materials Science and Chemistry
