Mike Stephenson

Professor Stephenson is a distinguished geoscientist with the GeoGPT Research Group. He focuses on bringing artificial intelligence into the world of earth sciences, particularly paleontology. Additionally , he is the Founding President of the Deep-time Digital Earth program, and he has been leading its operations across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa since 2022.
Professor Michael Stephenson has over 30 years of global experience in earth sciences and paleontology, which includes an eight-year stint at the British Geological Survey serving as Executive Chief Scientist and Director of Science and Technology. Mike has been advising governments on geoscience for nearly two decades, giving him a fantastic grasp of government policies, industrial activities, and funding landscapes both in the UK and globally, especially when it comes to applied and energy geosciences like carbon capture and storage and shale gas. He also spent 12 years as the editor-in-chief of an Elsevier scientific journal. On the academic side, he is a visiting professor at Nanjing University in China and Karakoram International University, and he has previously held various honorary, special, and visiting professorships at the University of Leicester, the University of Nottingham, and the University of Milan in Italy.
