Martin Gastal

Mr. Martin Gastal (MBA and MSc in Physics) is a senior staff member at CERN, the world’s largest laboratory dedicated to research in particle physics, where he serves as the CERN Adviser for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Previously, Mr. Gastal managed the experimental area of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector, one of the two experiments responsible for the discovery of the Higgs Boson. The CMS, designed to explore new particles over the course of 30 years, is one of the largest and most advanced scientific instruments ever created by humankind. He also played a key role in integrating new universities into the CMS collaboration, fostering engagement focused on engineering and technology development. Mr. Gastal supported projects that leveraged CERN technology to benefit local communities and promote economic development in partner countries. Additionally, he led outreach initiatives to make CERN and CMS more accessible to the public.

He continues in his facilitative role, focusing on outreach and engagement, and as the partnership and engagement lead for the Open Quantum Institute (OQI). Hosted by CERN and born at GESDA, with support from UBS, OQI promotes global and inclusive access to quantum computing and the development of applications for the benefit of humanity.
