Marieke Wesselkamp

Marieke is completing her PhD in environmental sciences at the University of Freiburg, within the department of Biometry and Environmental Systems Analysis. She pursued an independent research project on uncertainty-induced limits of environmental forecasts in learnt systems. Since 2023, Marieke is working in close collaboration with the ECMWF in developing machine learning based emulators for the land surface scheme of the IFS, ECLand. Her main interest is exploring the potential and the limitations of theory-informed machine learning approaches for forecasting at the interface with earth system sciences. Marieke research focus are data-driven forecasts of land surface states and their evaluation with seasonal forecast horizons.
