Maria Alexandra Co Austria

Maria Alexandra “Alex” Co Austria is the Deputy Data Protection Officer of Globe Telecom, the largest telecommunications network in the Philippines, and Senior Manager for AI Legal and Policy Team under its AI and Information Security Shared Services Group, where she works on policies and regulations for AI governance, cybersecurity, and data protection.

Prior to Globe, she worked as a Senior Associate for a tax services law firm and as an associate for a full-service law firm specializing in technology and competition law.

Alex earned her juris doctor degree from the University of the Philippines-Diliman College of Law. She is a member of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines and the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). Through the IAPP, she obtained her certifications in Information Privacy Management (CIPM) and AI Governance (AIGP).

Currently, Alex is pursuing her Master of Laws degree in Technology, Media, and Telecommunications at the Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) as a Chevening Scholar under the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office. Under QMUL’s Cloud Legal Project, she is working on research on autonomous AI regulations and has recently presented her research before the UK Financial Conduct Authority with Professor Chris Reed. She is also part of the inaugural cohort of the London Initiative for Safe AI’s AI Safety Studio. On the side, she runs a LinkedIn reading club, where participants discuss the latest topics on AI safety and policy.
