Judy Backhouse

Judy Backhouse

Judy is a scholar currently researching smart governance. Her previous work has included ICT for development and the role of information systems in smart cities in Africa. She has worked in academia, lecturing topics in mathematics, information systems and management at a number of South African universities. Her research interests have also extended to higher education management, technology education and doctoral education.

Judy worked in the IT industry in positions ranging from technical (programmer, systems administrator) to senior management (CIO) and she has wide interests in systems, learning, and creativity. She is also the author of “Is a PhD for Me?” a book for professionals considering doctoral study, an artist and a one-time entrepreneur (launched a co-working space in Johannesburg).
