Jonas Weiss

Jonas is a senior research scientist and has been with IBM Research – Zurich (ZRL) for about twenty years. He received his masters and PhD degree in electrical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich.

Before joining IBM, he has held different positions in the industry, designing medical electronics systems and integrated circuits for mobile devices.

His scientific background and expertise include analog chip design, high-speed ESD-protection, electro-optical circuit and module design and characterisation, large (compute) system analysis and specification and chronic disease monitoring using wearable and IoT devices.

For many years he studied and exploited interdependencies between analog computing devices, architectures and respective workloads and algorithms for cognitive computing.

Jonas’ current focus is on Machine Learning and AI algorithms for satellite images in the context of climate change and sustainability, where he leads an activity around understanding the risks of extreme weather events and natural hazard risks and how they will affect society and businesses in the future.

Jonas has (co-) authored over 50 peer reviewed scientific publications, has over 30 patents granted and has held countless technical and invited presentations at high-level international conferences.
