Joanna Doummar

Joanna Doummar is an associate professor of Groundwater Hydrology at the department of Geology at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. She holds a PhD degree in Hydrogeology from Georg- August University Goettingen in Germany, a MSc. in Geology from the American University of Beirut (AUB), and a MSc. in Hydrogeology from the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland). Her research focuses on the development of methods for the assessment of quantitative vulnerability of karst aquifers including the numerical simulation of integrated karst systems, the characterization of karst aquifers using different methods and the assessment of transport behavior using specific contamination indicators. She is the principal investigator of various local and international research grants at the Department of Geology of the American University of Beirut (Lebanon) since 2013. Through these scientific and developmental projects related to karst and other groundwater applications (e.g., Managed Aquifer Recharge), she aims at promoting hydrogeology nationally and internationally. Her research includes also the gradual construction of a high-resolution monitoring network of water resources and climatic parameters in poorly investigated and monitored sites in Lebanon. Beside various collaborations with European, American, and regional scientists, she has supervised many undergraduate and graduate students on various research topics in hydrogeology that culminated in various publications. In addition to the dissemination of the research to the scientific community, she also aims at applying the research outcome at a local scale to overcome national water quality and quantity problems, to make science accessible to non-technical people, and to help in the implementation of tailored policies based on sound scientific research outcomes.

She is the Vice President of IAH (International association of Hydrogeologists) for the MENA region, a member of the IAH Karst Commission. She has been accepted into to the World Economic Forum Young Scientists Community- Class of 2020. She is also the co-founder of LAUS (Local Association for Underground Studies) aiming at encouraging science and service work in hydrogeology at a local scale.
