Ioannis Prapas

Ioannis Prapas is a Big Data and Deep Learning researcher at the Orion Lab group, part of the IASAARS institute of the National Observatory of Athens. Currently pursuing a PhD in “Deep Learning Methods for Wildfire Forecasting at Different Spatiotemporal Scales” with the ISP group at the University of Valencia, advised by Prof. Gustau Camps-Valls, Dr Ioannis Papoutsis and Dr Nuno Carvalhais. He holds an M.Eng in electrical and computer engineering and an MSc in big data management and analytics. Ioannis has prior experience as a software developer at CERN and a machine learning freelancer.

Since 2020, Ioannis has focused on Deep Learning applications for Natural Hazard Management, including radar-based landslide detection (NASA challenge, FDL 2022) and fire danger forecasting at different spatiotemporal scales. In the context of the projects DeepCube H2020 (EU-funded) and SeasFire (ESA-funded), Ioannis has also worked on the development and evaluation of prototype AI applications stemming from his research, which are being assessed by emergency responders.
