Hans Thybo

Professor Hans Thybo is an internationally renowned geophysicist, currently serving as Distinguished Professor at the Deep-Earth Exploration Laboratory of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences and Chief Scientist of the Deep-Time Digital Earth (DDE) Zhejiang International Research Center.
He’s also a member of the Academia Europaea, as well as the Royal Danish and Norwegian Academies of Science and Letters. On top of that, he’s a Fellow of both the Geological Society of America and the Royal Astronomical Society in London.

He previously served as a professor at the University of Copenhagen for 31 years, during which he established the university’s geophysics academic discipline, and is a recipient of the “Chinese Government Friendship Award.” He is the current chairperson of the International Lithosphere Programme (ILP), the editor-in-chief of “Earth and Planetary Science Letters”, and the honorary editor-in-chief of “Tectonophysics”. As one of the co-founders of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), he has successively held the positions of EGU division chairperson, secretary-general and president.

Over his career, Professor Thybo has achieved multiple groundbreaking results in the fields of plate tectonics and geodynamics—including the first discovery of deep plate tectonic structures dating back over 1.5 billion years, the introduction of the Mid-Lithospheric Discontinuity (MLD) theory, and the revelation of new mechanisms regarding the role of magmatism in rift and basin formation.

Professor Thybo has initiated and led over 60 major international earth science cooperation projects. Currently, his main focus includes promoting connections and cooperation with experts from DDE and related global fields, coordinating the overall planning and implementation of geothermal-related scientists’ seminars, establishing a global geothermal heat flow database, developing specialized artificial intelligence agents for the geothermal field, and taking the lead in establishing an international cooperation network for the global geothermal heat flow discipline.
