H.E. Mr. Mustapha Ferjani

Professor Mustapha Ferjani has served as Minister of Health of the Republic of Tunisia since 25 August 2024. He is a senior physician, academic leader and public health decision-maker with extensive experience in health system governance, emergency preparedness, intensive care, military medicine and national crisis management.

A graduate of the Faculty of Medicine of Tunis in 1987, Professor Ferjani built a distinguished academic and clinical career in anesthesiology and intensive care. He held several senior leadership positions, including Director General of Military Health from 2017 to 2022 and Minister-Counsellor to the Presidency of the Republic from 2022 to 2024.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he played a leading role in Tunisia’s national response, contributing to the expansion of intensive care capacity, the coordination of vaccination efforts, the deployment of field hospitals and the strengthening of emergency preparedness mechanisms. His background in critical care and crisis management has shaped his strong commitment to pandemic prevention, preparedness and response.

Professor Ferjani has also held prominent leadership roles within Tunisian scientific societies. He served as President of the Tunisian Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care and of the Tunisian Society for Organ Donation Awareness, and contributed to the establishment of the Tunisian Society for Healthcare Simulation. He also led a research unit focused on cardiac dysfunction in septic shock, which was later upgraded into a research laboratory, reflecting his long-standing commitment to critical care research, patient safety, medical training and preparedness for severe infectious and emergency conditions.

As Minister of Health, his priorities include strengthening primary healthcare, improving health system resilience, advancing equitable access to care, promoting digital health, supporting domestic pharmaceutical production, and developing strategic health infrastructure. He champions a vision of health as a pillar of equity, national sovereignty and sustainable development.

Under his leadership, Tunisia has accelerated the implementation of the digital hospital model, with the deployment of telemedicine and teleradiology solutions aimed at improving equitable access to specialized care for populations living in inland and underserved regions.
