Francisca Ferreira Santos

Francisca is a student research fellow at Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de Partículas (LIP), working on RADEM, the radiation monitor aboard the JUICE mission, one of the European Space Agency (ESA)’s largest projects to explore Jupiter’s moons. Her research involves data analysis and simulation, focusing on detecting energetic charged particles and assessing their potential impact on the spacecraft.

Her interest in space exploration led her to pursue both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Physics Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), where she rediscovered her love for science. She is particularly passionate about interdisciplinary and applied physics, always integrating programming into her projects. During her Master’s, she spent a semester abroad in India, driven by both personal and academic curiosity. There, she was introduced to machine learning, sparking a new personal interest and opening new paths for research and innovation.

Throughout her journey in research and academia, Francisca was in close contact with science communication and community engagement, finding fulfillment in making complex scientific ideas accessible to a broader audience. This passion inspired her to join the Viseu Hub Young AI Leaders, where she can actively contribute to her local community, connecting her interests in technology and education, while providing a positive social impact.
