Farzaneh Badiei

Farzaneh Badiei

Dr. Farzaneh Badiei works at the intersection of AI and internet governance, focusing on how technical systems and policies affect fundamental rights and the architecture of the internet. Her recent work examines the role of AI in trust and safety practices, including the use of automated tools for content moderation and abuse mitigation. She has contributed to policy discussions on AI training methods, the implications of web crawler restrictions, and the governance of access to training data. Through her initiative, Digital Medusa, she studies decentralization and infrastructure governance, including how AI systems interact with foundational layers like DNS and IP addressing. A central concern in her work is the preservation of the open web; she engages with standards organizations and multistakeholder bodies to resist access fragmentation and prevent restrictive defaults that limit interoperability or marginalize smaller actors. Her approach emphasizes transparency and institutional accountability with a focus on freedoms and liberty. Farzaneh holds a PhD from Hamburg University and has worked on these issues as a researcher at Yale Law School and Georgia Tech.
