Disa Queiroz Palma

Disa is currently a Software Engineer and she studied Biomedical Engineering at university, where one of her main focuses was in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
It was during those years that she engaged in volunteering work in different fields, including a student club focused on bringing technology – including AI – to everyone under the moto “Technology is everywhere, make it for everyone”. She worked with schools, local businesses and other organizations to show how tech can and should benefit communities.
Disa worked on various AI projects, one of them was her master thesis’ where she studied one of the most famous algorithms used for object detection. While diving more into articles about Deep Learning – and Object Detection in particular -, she learned how the motives to justify the use of object detection varied: going from agriculture to border vigilance and military applications. Something that the author of the algorithm she studied – YOLO – also reflected on, which led him to give up his career due to ethical concerns regarding the usage of his Computer Vision research contributions.
Since learning all of these and now that we are going through a moment where no one knows exactly where the use of AI will take us, Disa believes more than ever that people should be educated about AI’s capabilities and problems, engineers should consider the ethical dilemmas of what they develop and we, as a society, should make sure that AI is used in favour of people and their communities, since healthy communities are the true driving force of society and democracy.
