Dimiter Prodanov

Dr. Dimiter Prodanov, MD, PhD, obtained an MD degree from the Medical University – Sofia in 1999 and a Ph.D. degree from the Twente University, Enschede, the Netherlands in 2006. He was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the International Brain Research Organization to continue his research in neuroprosthetics at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, in 2006 and later at the University of Liege, Belgium, where we he investigated the effects of vagus nerve stimulation. His technical interests include applications of computer algebra tools and numerical algorithms to modeling biophysical phenomena and image processing. In the period 2003 – 2016 he was an active contributor to the public-domain imaging program ImageJ. Since 2009 he has been actively engaged in the emerging discipline of Neuroinformatics. In 2008 Dimiter Prodanov joined IMEC, Belgium, a world-leading research center in the area of nanoelectronics and digital technologies, as a senior scientist in neurotechnology. From 2016 to 2018 Dr. Prodanov coordinated the H2020 project Na+noStreeM, investigating the safety of nanomaterials used in semiconductor manufacturing. In the period 2022 – 2025 Dimiter Prodanov was heading the Imec Biobank in his role as a regulatory expert.

In 2021, Dr. Prodanov was appointed Associate Professor at the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (IICT) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Since 2023, he has led the ERA Chair VIBraTE (https://vibrate-project.eu/), a Horizon Europe Widening project dedicated to exploring the interactions between implanted brain–computer interfaces and brain tissue. In 2024, he was appointed to the UNESCO ad hoc working group on the Ethics of Neurotechnology, contributing to global ethical guidelines for emerging neurotechnologies. Dr. Prodanov is the author of more than 60 peer-reviewed scientific publications in several disciplines.
