Diane Odongo Apio

Apio Diane Odongo is a computer science student at the Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda with a strong background in programming with proficiency in languages specifically python and javascript. Her zeal to fuse artificial intelligence and machine learning to innovate sustainable solutions that address global challenges especially within African communities, led her to apply for membership at Young AI Leaders, as a concious step towards this goal. Her academic journey is further supported by hands-on experience gained through her collaboration on artificial intelligence and machine learning–inclusive projects, where she leverages her knowledge in AI/ML as well as web development.

As a young woman in tech herself, Diane is passionate about mentoring and inspiring girls and young women to pursue careers in STEM. She believes that creating inclusive spaces for women in tech is not just important but essential for building an equitable future powered by diverse innovation, and this belief has since fueled her active participation in community meetups, hackathons, talks and networking events at Africa’s Talking Women in Tech Uganda.

In addition to her technical pursuits, Diane is an avid reader who finds inspiration and grounding in philosophy, factual literature and global affairs. She enjoys reading the works of thinkers like Søren Kierkegaard and Osamu Dazai among others, whose reflections on existence, ethics, and identity sharpen her critical thinking and deepen her empathy, both valuable traits in responsible AI development. Her regular engagement with The Economist , a habit inspired by her father, allows her to stay informed on global trends in technology, economics, and policy, helping her understand the broader implications of AI innovation in society.

As a new member of the Young AI Leaders under AI for Good , Diane hopes to collaborate with creative, like-minded individuals to champion AI driven solutions that uplift communities and address sustainable development issues.
