Ciira wa Maina

Ciira wa Maina is an Associate Professor at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in Nyeri, Kenya where he teaches electrical engineering and conducts research in a number of areas including signal processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning and data science with a focus on environmental conservation applications such as bioacoustics. Since September 2019 he has led the Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAIL) which aims to nurture the next generation of AI talent and develop solutions to real-world problems. Ciira also serves as the board chair of Data Science Africa, a grassroots capacity building organisation that runs summer schools and workshops on the African continent.

Prior to joining DeKUT in 2013, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Sheffield between 2011 and 2013, a PhD student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, USA between 2007 and 2011 and a BSc Student at the University of Nairobi between 2002 and 2007.
