CERNBot

Robots are used in the CERN accelerator complex for inspection, maintenance and repair tasks, to make the working environment safer for CERN‘s personnel as well as increase the availability of the beam for high energy physics research. Cutting edge research is undertaken across mechanical design, robotics software and human user interfaces. Whilst different robotic systems that run on rails or tracks are used at CERN, the majority are based on modular robotic mobile bases that can be equipped with one or two arms to perform inspection, maintenance and repair tasks. Different cameras can be used; visual cameras, cameras with point cloud feedback and thermal cameras. The robots can also host radiation, temperature, oxygen and other environmental cameras.

CERNbot robots are controller remotely by an operator at CERN using our intuitive human-robot interfaces, so that they can be safely situation on the surface while the robot works underground, and some use autonomous algorithms to perform repetitive tasks with higher accuracy.
