Amol Deshmukh

Dr. Amol Deshmukh is a Marie Curie Research Fellow at ETH Zurich and AIforGood Scholar. His research focuses on Human-Robot Interaction and the deployment of AI systems in real-world settings. He led pioneering HRI field studies deploying autonomous water-hauling and handwashing robots with first-time users in remote Indian villages, producing some of the earliest field evidence on robot acceptance in developing-country contexts. His current work centres on “WallBo,” a robot deployed in schools in Scotland and India to support children’s handwashing technique in alignment with WHO hygiene standards and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Across his work, he advocates for AI development that is transparent in its evidence, inclusive of communities historically under-represented in its design, and equitable in who benefits from its outcomes. His work has been featured by the BBC, IEEE Spectrum, The Telegraph, Der Spiegel, and Euronews.
