Alexey Akimov

Alexey graduated from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 2000 and completed his PhD in 2003 at the same institution. Since 1997, he has been working at the Laboratory of Optics of Active Media at the Department of Optics of the Lebedev Physical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences. His research has focused on the spectroscopy of narrow nonlinear resonances in atomic pairs and laser-cooled atom ensembles, as well as their potential applications in metrology.
In 2006, Alexey joined the group of Mikhail Lukin at Harvard University. There, he worked on creating spin-photon interfaces and studied the interactions between quantum dots, plasmons, and plasmonic resonators. He also began exploring the interactions between cold atoms and photonic structures, as well as sensory applications of diamond color centers, particularly in the field of magnetometry using NV centers.
From 2010 to 2012, Alexey served as director of the Russian Quantum Center. In 2012, he became the head of one of the scientific groups at the center, launching a new project to create quantum simulators based on thulium atoms. As part of the work of this group, the Bose-Einstein condensation of thulium atoms was obtained for the first time in the world. From 2015 to 2022, Alexey also worked as a professor at the Physics Department of Texas A&M University, the conservation group at the Russian Quantum Center and the LPI. His field of work today covers a wide range of tasks, including plasmonics, photonics, quantum dots and centers in diamond coloring and their applications to quantum sensors and single-photon sources. As part of the Russian roadmap for quantum computing, he is developing a quantum simulator based on thulium atoms.
He successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in early 2024, and is currently serving as the head of the “Quantum Simulators and Integrated Photonics” group and the Scientific Director at the Russian Quantum Center.
