Alexander K Epstein

Alexander K Epstein is Chief of Vehicle Regulations at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), where he leads the secretariat supporting the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29). In this role, he serves as Secretary to WP.29, coordinating global efforts by governments and industry to develop internationally harmonized vehicle regulations.

His work focuses on enabling the safe deployment of connected and automated vehicles, with a strong emphasis on addressing safety for people outside of vehicles, while supporting innovation and sustainability across the road transport sector. He contributes to the development of regulatory approaches for emerging technologies and supports the implementation of UN vehicle regulations worldwide.

Earlier in his career, Alexander contributed to the DARPA Urban Challenge as part of Draper Laboratory and MIT, supporting the development of one of the first autonomous vehicle systems operating in a real-world urban environment.

Prior to UNECE, he spent over 15 years at the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, leading innovative intergovernmental and public-private partnerships on transportation safety, policy, and implementation of the Safe System Approach.

He holds a PhD and SM from Harvard University and a BS from Olin College of Engineering.
