Artificial intelligence can do more than optimize systems. It can help relieve human suffering. Prof. Ortiz Catalan’s talk focuses on Phantom Limb Pain (PLP), a debilitating condition that affects millions of people worldwide, particularly where access to specialized care is limited. It presents a scientifically grounded approach that uses AI to decode the intended movement of a missing limb and mixed reality to provide real-time feedback, enabling rehabilitation for pain relief. The presentation explores how this work is being translated beyond the lab through humanitarian deployment, social entrepreneurship, and global education, in pursuit of Prof. Ortiz Catalan’s long-term goal of eradicating PLP. It offers a case study in how frontier technologies can be harnessed to advance equity, dignity, and global health impact.
