Innovate for impact: The winning AI use cases

Artificial intelligence (AI) has great potential to benefit society, but the technology’s full potential can only be realized if it is representative of the diversity of populations. With growing development of AI, the disparities that separate segments of society and nations into those who have and those who do not have digital access, skills, and knowledge to AI, may lead to equity in digital use, opportunities, and benefits, we can’t meet the SDGs without ending the digital divide especially on AI.

AI for Good Team proposed a project to showcase AI application to drive the achievement of SDGs, which was approved by the Steering Committee of China’s donation in 2024. Frederic Werner, Head of Strategic Engagement Division, TSB led the project team. The project received 219 use case submissions from 38 countries and 118 scholar applications from 41 countries. The use cases were evaluated based on clarity, SDG alignment, AI’s impact on SDGs, future work, and adherence to ITU scope. The top 20% were selected for the pilot release in May 2024, with a final version due in July 2024. And we also invited 18 use cases authors to present their use cases.

13 scholars were selected and funded to participate in AI4G 2024, 12 out of which are from developing countries and the women scholars account for almost 50%.

Through our effort of the use cases and workshop, we hope to achieve the following goals:

  • Bridge the knowledge gap and promote experience sharing on AI applications.
  • Release a stocktaking of AI empowered vertical industry and the categories of cases will align with SDGs.
  • Foster collaboration and networking among participants, including policy makers, academia, industry, and civil society, etc,
