This session will explore how AI is transforming assistive technologies and tools to enhance independence, mobility, and quality of life for people with disabilities. Developed at the Human Engineering Research Laboratories (HERL), these innovations integrate AI with robotics, serious games, and user-centered design to create intelligent systems that adapt to individual needs and environments.

The talk will highlight several breakthrough technologies, such as the Mobility Enhanced Robotic Wheelchair, AI-enhanced serious games training systems like HERL-Town, Virtual Seating Coach, and Kirigami-based wheelchair design, that demonstrate how AI can be used to enhance function and improve education. Emphasis will be placed on real-world deployment and open-source collaboration. Attendees will gain insight into the challenges, ethical considerations, and transformative potential of AI in rehabilitation engineering. Ultimately, this session will underscore how AI, when guided by human values and inclusive design, can empower ability and drive societal impact.
