AI and sustainability walk into a café: Satellites, data centres in space and beyond

  • Date
    9 July 2025
    Timeframe
    10:00 - 12:00 CEST
    Duration
    2 hours

Not just a thought experiment, this is a conversation we urgently need and inherent to the future we need to reimagine. In this workshop, we will explore how emerging technologies like IOWN (Innovative Optical and Wireless Network), satellite-based Earth observation, and Space-based data centers are helping reframe the relationship between artificial intelligence and environmental stewardship.  While headlines warn of AI’s growing energy appetite, the reality is more nuanced—and ultimately optimistic. From climate-resilient infrastructure monitoring powered by geospatial intelligence, to low-energy optical data transport and intelligent optimization of resource use, this session showcases how AI and sustainability can be, and will be, copasetic, and in some cases interdependent. Through stories of innovation and impact, we’ll discover how deep tech and sustainability can synergistically design a future of economic prosperity and planetary well-being.
