  • Fifth-generation (5G) communications networks, aim to be the backbone of the digital transformation and enable massive technological shifts across all industry sectors. 5G promises to provide enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), mission-critical internet of things (IoT), and massive IoT – bringing the internet of everything, everywhere. While 5G is being deployed, it is timely and important to look at the unaddressed gaps from 5G, and start developing 6G technologies to bridge the gaps.

This AI for Good discussion shares examples from a few strategic 5G vertical clusters in Singapore, analyzes some of the unaddressed gaps from 5G, and discusses the driving needs for 6G technologies. As examples, we discuss the need for massive ultra-reliability low-latency communications (M-URLLC), intelligent and integrated aggregation of licensed and unlicensed spectrums, joint sensing and communication (JSAC), and software-defined artificial intelligence-supported reconfigurability in the system, network, and radio environments. Some early results will also be shared on Singapore’s 5G vision.
