Shiping Liu

Dr. Shiping Liu is the Chief Scientist of Brain Science at BGI-Research. He holds a Ph.D. in Genetics and a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics from South China University of Technology. His research focuses on computational biology, multi-omics big data, and the application of AI foundation models to decode complex biological systems, with a particular emphasis on the cell atlases and evolutionary developmental dynamics of neural and immune systems. Notably, Dr. Liu led the team that developed Genos, the world’s first tens-of-billions-parameter human genomic foundation model. He has also been deeply involved in several major international scientific endeavors, including the genome projects for the giant panda and polar bear, as well as the Cancer Single Cell project and the Human Cell Atlas. A highly cited scholar, Dr. Liu has published over 40 SCI papers with more than 10,000 total citations and an H-index of 35. As a leading author (first or corresponding), he has contributed to 25 publications, 14 of which were featured in top-tier journals such as Cell, Nature, and Science.
