Barry Sanders

Barry Sanders is a senior fellow at CIGI and a leading figure in quantum science and technology, with research spanning quantum sensing, communication, computing and optics. He is scientific director of the University of Calgary’s “Quantum City”, where he leads efforts to build a quantum innovation ecosystem in Canada.

His work spans quantum computing, quantum sensing and metrology, and more, and he has trained numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who now hold key positions across academia, industry, and start-ups worldwide.

He is committed to expanding access to quantum education and resources globally. He has organized and taught summer schools and workshops in countries including Brazil, Pakistan, India, Iran, and Morocco, and has supported student training from Africa. Through initiatives such as Quantum Africa, he has increased skills and awareness in quantum science, emphasizing inclusive participation and practical applications.

He also plays a key role in shaping the broader quantum ecosystem where he engages with policymakers, NATO workshops, and international networks to advance collaborative research, technology adoption, and workforce development. His efforts strengthen global quantum capacity, promote equal access to knowledge, and nurture partnerships that integrate research, education, and societal impact across continents.

Barry is also a visiting scientist at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), an advisor for CERN’s Open Quantum Institute and the quantum computing Google’s XPrize, a mentor for Creative Destruction Labs in Toronto and Calgary and co-lead of the Canada-France Centre national de la recherche scientifique International Research Network. He is a member of standards bodies, a member of three editorial boards, and has been chair for numerous conferences.

Prior to 2003, he was a professor and head of physics at Macquarie University and held several distinguished international visiting positions. He holds two Diplomas, a Ph.D. and a D.Sc. from Imperial College London, fellowships with Optica, the American Physical Society, the UK Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Canada, and the 2022 City of Calgary International Achievement Award.
