Live Biosonification Performance

Live Biosonification Performance

In this live demonstration, plants and fungi generate music and movement in real time using their own bio‑electrical signals. Electrodes placed on the organism detect tiny fluctuations in conductivity caused by changes in water movement, ionic concentration, and environmental stimuli. These signals are translated into MIDI data, which controls synthesizers, lighting, and our custom‑built bionic arms.

The demonstration reveals the complexity of plant and fungal behaviour, highlighting their capacity for responsiveness, adaptation, and communication. Rather than decoding a nervous system, the performance offers a poetic sonification of the organism’s “mood,” making invisible biological processes tangible.

This hybrid of art, science, and performance technology invites audiences to rethink the boundaries between human and non‑human creativity, and to consider how intelligence might manifest across the living and non-living world.
