Renato Portugal

Professor Renato Portugal is a Full Researcher at LNCC/MCTI working in the area of Quantum Computing, particularly in Quantum Algorithms. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics from PUC-Rio (1981), a Master’s Degree (1984), and a Doctorate (1988) in Physics from the Brazilian Center for Physical Research (CBPF). He did postdoctoral studies at the University of Waterloo and Queen’s University at Kingston in Canada. Currently, he is a Cientista do Nosso Estado by Faperj, a researcher 1D from CNPq, a member of SBC and SBMAC, and a member of the editorial board of the Natural Computing journal. He has supervised 17 master’s dissertations (one of them won the SBMAC award), 13 doctoral theses (one of them won the Capes award), and supervised postdoctoral activity at LNCC of at least 14 researchers in the fields of quantum computing and computer algebra. He served as the general chair of the III Workshop-School of Computing and Quantum Information and published several textbooks in the areas of computer algebra and quantum computing, in particular, the book ‘Quantum Walks and Search Algorithms’ by Springer. He has published more than 120 complete scientific papers in journals and annals, one of them winning the Howard E. Brandt Best Paper award from Springer-Nature. Currently, he is doing research on the following topics: quantum algorithms, analysis and simulation of quantum walks, and quantum error correction codes.
