Antonio Abelém

Antonio Abelém is a Full Professor at the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), Brazil, where he has been a faculty member of the Graduate Program in Computer Science since its inception. He holds a Ph.D. in Informatics from PUC-Rio (2003) and was a visiting researcher at UMass Amherst (USA) from 2019 to 2020. He leads the Research Group on Computer Networks and Multimedia Communication (GERCOM), coordinating numerous national and international research and development projects, many in partnership with industry, in areas such as quantum networks, software-defined networks, network security, and intelligent systems for socio-environmental sustainability. Notable projects include EcoSustain (FAPESP, 2024–present), Quantum Internet Routing Protocols (2022–2024), as well as participation in OpenRAN@Brasil and the SMARTNESS 2030 Engineering Research Center (ERC), a FAPESP–Ericsson consortium. In 2024, he received the Outstanding Researcher Award from the Brazilian Symposium on Computer Networks and Distributed Systems (SBRC) for his scientific contributions and service to the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC). He is a CNPq Productivity Researcher in Technological Development, an IEEE member, currently serves on the SBC Council, and is a former CEO of the Guamá Science and Technology Park, where he contributed to building Pará’s innovation ecosystem.
