Africa is home to a significant proportion of the world’s biodiversity and it is important to promote the development of conservation and biodiversity monitoring solutions on the continent. In this talk I will describe efforts at the Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAIL) at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in Nyeri Kenya to develop, deploy and evaluate AI based approaches to biodiversity monitoring and conservation. Applications ranging from bioacoustic data collection and model training for the Mt Kenya ecosystem, camera trap data analysis for endangered species monitoring as well as reforestation monitoring will be covered. In addition, the talk will share insights gained from DSAIL’s efforts to create a talent pipeline capable of leveraging AI for biodiversity applications.
