Stewart Bain

Stewart Bain is CEO and founder of NorthStar Earth & Space. He recognizes the need for a lasting space economy and the importance that big data analytics, machine learning, and AI plays in the security and safety of the space environment.

Stewart combines a unique set of technical and business intelligence to create & commercialize disruptive technologies for aero and space applications from large scale hardware and specialized systems to sophisticated algorithms and products for advanced analytics and big data services.

At NorthStar, Stewart has focused on the benefits of a system of systems approach that combines complex hardware systems with machine learning systems using data driven algorithms to deliver high quality commercial services to precisely monitor activity in space. This is achieved with a patented Concept of Operations (CONOPS) that sets NorthStar apart as a leader in satellite image processing and big data analytics to provide a meaningful and reliable commercial contribution to space domain awareness.

Stewart leverages over thirty years of technical and business aerospace experience. Stewart led engineering design, integration, and test teams for the breakthrough 15m RadarSat 1 (passive SAR) and 2 antennas (active SAR) and deployment systems as well as the touch & control sensitivity systems for robotic arms and the in-orbit replaceable power conditioner systems for the International Space Station
(ISS). He designed and delivered numerous optical systems for various space science applications that monitored the aurora borealis and the Earth’s upper atmosphere.

Stewart led an international collaboration between NASA Langley and UBE Industries of Japan and was recognized with a NASA R&D 100 award for his distinguished contributions. He holds a master’s degree in aerospace engineering and an MBA.
