Paul Zimmerman

Dr. Paul Zimmerman is a field archaeologist, educator, and technologist affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania Museum. He has done extensive fieldwork on contract archaeology and academic projects in North America and the Middle East, with emphasis on landscape studies, architecture, and ancient urbanism. As a graduate student working in the Museum Applied Science Center for Archaeology (MASCA) he developed surveying software for archaeologists, the latest version of which he currently maintains as an open source project. Utilizing geospatial tools such as GIS, drone imagery, magnetometry, and laser scanning he seeks to shed light on ancient people’s histories and interactions with their environment. Following a twenty-year hiatus from active fieldwork, during which he was the systems manager for a prestigious K–12 school in New York City, he returned to field archaeology in 2021. However, as co-host of the ArchaeoTech Podcast, he has kept abreast of the latest trends in technological approaches to archaeological research, regularly interviewing colleagues who are pushing the field forward.
