Michael Mollel

Michael Samwel Mollel is a Tanzanian AI scientist, wireless communications engineer, and tech entrepreneur whose pioneering work bridges advanced research and tangible impacts across Africa.

Michael holds a PhD in Information & Communication Science and Engineering, earned jointly from the University of Glasgow (UoG) and the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science & Technology (NM-AIST). Currently, he serves as a Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow, where his innovative research spans from machine-learning-driven 6G wireless technologies to Wi-Fi-based human-activity recognition systems.

As the founder of Sartify, an AI startup renowned for developing the first large language model specifically designed for Swahili and other East African languages, Michael has empowered over 200 million speakers with advanced conversational AI tools. Sartify’s technology is reshaping education, business communication, and public services throughout the region.

Beyond entrepreneurship, Michael contributes to global AI initiatives as a member of the Technical Advisory Committee for ITU’s “AI for Good – Innovate for Impact” program. In this role, he helps shape international standards for ethical AI use and develops impactful AI-driven solutions, such as transparent, corruption-free public procurement systems in Tanzania.

Michael is deeply committed to democratizing AI. He actively mentors emerging data scientists through regional boot camps and regularly shares insights through public lectures focused on responsible AI adoption.
