Joongi Kim

Joongi Kim is the CTO and Co-founder of Lablup Inc., where he leads the architecture and development of Backend.AI, an open-source platform designed for scalable AI infrastructure and on-demand machine learning execution environments. His work focuses on building efficient and accessible AI computing systems that enable researchers, developers, and organizations to harness large-scale computing resources with greater flexibility and efficiency.
With a background in distributed systems, high-performance networking, and GPU-accelerated computing, Joongi has contributed to the design of container-based GPU virtualization and large-scale AI workload orchestration technologies. His research and engineering work have influenced practical approaches to improving GPU utilization and enabling multi-tenant machine learning workloads in cloud and cluster environments.
Joongi received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from KAIST, where his doctoral research explored high-performance packet processing frameworks for heterogeneous processors including GPUs and many-core accelerators. His work was recognized with the Best Student Paper Award at ACM EuroSys Conference. In recognition of his contributions to AI infrastructure technology, he also received the Minister’s Award from the Ministry of Science and ICT of the Republic of Korea in 2024.
Beyond his work at Lablup, Joongi actively contributes to the open-source ecosystem, particularly in the Python and asyncio communities. He is the author and maintainer of several widely used open-source projects and frequently shares his expertise at international developer conferences including NVIDIA GTC and PyCon events worldwide.
Through both research and industry leadership, Joongi Kim continues to advance the development of scalable AI infrastructure and open technologies that make high-performance computing more accessible to developers and organizations around the world
