Fredrik Gran

Fredrik Gran

Fredrik Gran is a Swedish composer, researcher, and pioneer in robotic musical performance. His work explores the intersection of musical craftsmanship, embodied technology, and machine expression. Through custom-built systems, most notably The Robot Cellist, featuring industrial robotic arms performing on a cello, he investigates new forms of agency, presence, and sonic materiality.

The robot cellist has appeared in contexts ranging from contemporary art installations to orchestral and electronic music stages, including performances with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra and in a large-scale audiovisual production at Sphere in Las Vegas with Anyma.

Gran’s broader compositional work has been presented at international festivals such as Warsaw Autumn, ISCM World New Music Days, and Nordic Music Days, and performed by ensembles including the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra, London City Philharmonic, and the International Contemporary Ensemble. He is affiliated with the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT) in Montreal and is a co-founder of the artistic research initiative FINIS MUSICAE.
