Changhyun Byun

Dr. Changhyun Byun is the CEO and principal technology strategist at iSciLab, Inc., a Seoul-based research and innovation company at the forefront of AI-driven animal biometrics, industrial artificial intelligence, and animal health platforms. He holds a Ph.D. in Information Technology, and combines technical expertise with strategic insight to advance responsible, life-centered applications of AI in the fields of animal welfare, veterinary diagnostics, and biometric identification. He is also actively involved in developing AI technologies for livestock farming, including systems for optimizing fattening and growth management, contributing to more efficient, sustainable, and welfare-oriented livestock production.

Dr. Byun is a leading expert in animal biometrics, working on non-invasive identification technologies for species including dogs, cattle, and horses. He has played a key role in shaping international standards through ITU-T, contributing to the development of biometric authentication protocols such as nose-print and facial recognition for animals. His work enables cost-effective, scalable, and ethical alternatives to invasive RFID systems—supporting rabies vaccination tracking, identity fraud prevention, and public health initiatives aligned with the WHO’s “Zero by 30” goal.

At AI for Good 2025, Dr. Byun presents how AI-powered animal identification systems not only improve animal welfare but also promote global health equity and responsible ownership. By enabling inclusive digital tools accessible even in low-resource settings, his work demonstrates how intelligent systems can advance both non-human and human well-being, forging a path toward a more compassionate and sustainable technological future.
