Anne Dames

Anne is an IBM Z Technical Executive and Distinguished Engineer with over 30 years of experience in cryptographic technology development and deployment strategies. She has a proven track record in firmware development, cryptographic architecture, and emerging technology integration. She is at the forefront of leading system-wide post-quantum cryptography (PQC) migration projects across diverse technology layers, including hardware, firmware, middleware, operating systems, and applications both within and outside of IBM. An expert in quantum safe cryptography migration strategy, she spends time driving emerging technology adoption, as well as fostering strong collaboration among cross-functional teams, vendors, and partners as they navigate internal and external dependencies. This is evidenced by her leadership /contributions to the first system in industry that leverages the quantum-safe algorithms selected for standardization by NIST which is engineered to protect the platform layer firmware, the IBM Z16. Anne is also a trusted advisor to government and industry security leaders. She was recently appointed member of the prestigious Information Security and Privacy Advisory Board (ISPAB) for the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). She was a guest panelist at the 2023 RSA Conference Cryptographer’s Panel moderated by Dr. Whitfield Diffie and the 2022 International Crypto Module Conference Migration to Post Quantum Cryptography panel moderated by Dr. Michelle Mosca. She has also been a panelist or guest speaker at the IBM Worldwide Security Conference, the Vanguard Security Conference, IBM WIT, Women Who Code and the National Cryptologic Foundation’s Convening to Act. Anne is a member of IEEE, the INCITS/Inclusive Terminology TC, NIST National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) Migration to PQC Working Group and serves on the advisory board of HOPE Worldwide Charlotte. She received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Johnson C. Smith University and a master’s degree in computer science from UNC Charlotte.
