In this workshop, participants will transform a smartphone into an innovation by building the E3bot. Beginning with the hardware, they will assemble a 3D-printed chassis and repurpose a smartphone to serve as the robot’s powerful “brain”. Once the robot is built, participants will explore Machine Learning by training a custom model to recognize visual cues, such as hand gestures or color cards. Finally, they will use block-based programming to bridge the gap between AI and action, enabling the E3bot to navigate and respond to its environment in real time. By the end of the session, participants will have a fully functional, AI-driven robot and the skills needed to create intelligent technology from everyday tools.

    Learning objectives:

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

    1. Master hardware assembly: Understand basic robotics architecture by assembling 3D-printed components and integrating motors with mobile hardware.

    2. Implement machine learning: Comprehend the ML lifecycle – data collection, training, and testing- using Google’s Teachable Machine to create custom vision models.

    3. Develop computational logic: Use block-based programming to bridge software and hardware, translating AI “predictions” into physical robotic movements.

    4. Apply Sustainable Engineering: Evaluate the environmental impact of technology by learning how to upcycle “e-waste” (older smartphones) into high-performance educational tools.

    5. Solve Real-World Problems: Debug complex systems where physical mechanics, connectivity, and algorithmic logic intersect.
