How can AI be used responsibly to overcome challenges that affect people and our planet? The Smartfeld FuturePitch workshop invites young participants to explore AI as a supportive tool for innovation, creativity and social impact. Working in small, collaborative teams, participants identify real-world challenges and develop solutions through guided ideation activities. AI-based tools are introduced where appropriate to support parts of the creative and development process, while participants remain in control of decisions and outcomes. Ideas are turned into vivid, tangible prototypes using the micro:bit platform, sensors and simple hardware.

Throughout the workshop, participants are encouraged to critically reflect on the role of AI: where it can add value, where human judgment is essential, and how responsible use, transparency, and inclusion matter when designing technology for good.

The workshop ends with a FuturePitch, where teams showcase their prototype, share the story behind their idea, and explain how AI helped unlock its potential. This is a space to experiment, collaborate, and discover how AI can become a force for good, and how young people can actively shape the future.

    Learning objectives:
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

    • Identify a real-world social or environmental challenge aligned with at least one Sustainable Development Goal and clearly articulate why it is relevant to people or communities.
    • Explain the potential role of Artificial Intelligence in addressing their selected challenge, including at least one opportunity and one limitation of using AI in this context.
    • Design and build a simple functional prototype using the micro:bit and basic hardware components that represents their proposed solution concept.
    • Evaluate how AI-based tools were used during the ideation or development process and justify where human judgment and decision-making were essential.
    • Present their solution in a structured FuturePitch, demonstrating the problem addressed, the prototype’s core functionality, and a reflection on responsible and inclusive AI use.
